About us

Late Hemchandra Roy and Late Sheelabati Roy envisioned the foundation of a school in Durgapur. Their idea and determination profoundly influenced their sons and daughters – Late Sri Goswamidas Roy, Sri Dwijapada Roy, Dr. Rabindra Nath Roy, Sri Lakshmi Narayan Roy, Smt Urmilla Konar, Smt Sulakshna Konar and Smt Satyarani Roy. In the year 1988, under the direct and active patronage of Dr. Rabindra Nath Roy and his wife Dr. (Mrs.) Protima K. Roy,a Professor of Science and Education at Drury University USA and encouragement of the brothers and sisters ‘Hemchandra Sheelabati Memorial Educational Trust’ was formed.

The HSMS took its first step in the academic session 1995-96.

Dr. Rabindra N. Roy, our Founder President, was born in a family having rich a cultural heritage in the city of Durgapur in the year 1939. In 1961 he obtained his M.Sc. degree in Chemistry with specialisation in Physical Chemistry from Jadavpur University, Kolkata and proceeded to the United States for advanced studies at Louisiana State University, and was awarded Ph.D. degree in 1966. He received D. Sc from Jadavpur University in 1999.

In 1966 he joined Drury University(then Drury College), U.S.A. as an Assistant Professor, where, by virtue of his dedication and scholastic activities he rose to the highest position in the department adorning the Chair. He served as the Chairman and Head of the department of Chemistry for about 30 years. Dr. Roy a recipient of the National Award 1998 by the American Chemical Society, guided his students to perform original and successful research funded by a grant of $ 4.5 million from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the American Chemical Society and other sources.

He has coauthor with his students more than 600 presentation , articles and publications in reputed journals and conferences besides having research collaboration with 25 universities around the world including a project wit Nobel laureate Johann Deisenhofer. He has guided students on more than 19 educational tours to India and other countries ad has been examiner of 40 P hd. theses.

Dr. Protima K. Roy. our vice president was professor of Education and Child Development t Drury University since 1975. She received B.Sc. Honors  and M.Sc.. Zoology degree from Presidency College Kolkata. Dr. (Mrs.) Roy participated in the British Science Education Workshop at Manchester Polytechnic in 1977. She attended a workshop on Early Childhood Education in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, in 1980. In 1981 she spent sabbatical leave at Cornell University. She completed course in the summer institution on Moral and Civic Education sponsored by Lawrence Kohlberg at Harvard University in 1984 and in 2003. Dr. Protima K. Roy has published several papers in premiers journals. She participated in the leadership development program at Yale University in 1998. She made many presentations at different international and national organizations. She has actively involved several undergraduate and graduates students in various Research activities.

Dr. Rabindra N. Roy retired from his 50 year service to Drury University, Springfield. Missouri, USA.

Vice Presidents of HSMS, Dr, Protima K. Roy has selflessly devoted her life to the cause of education and upliftment of the underprivileged. Drury University has recognized Madam Roy's 41 years of benefaction and introduce Protima K. Roy endowed Scholarship for Education Majors.
